Now that the issue of rabies has quietened, we hope the authorities concerned could work more effectively and not allow another outbreak to occur. It has been reported that during the Rabies crisis period, nearly 300 cases of dog bites were reported. We urge owners not to allow their pet dogs to roam freely. Dogs that bite and are then reported will be taken away by authorities for quarantine for a period of time. They will undergo a lot of stress and it is traumatic for both, the dog and the dog bite victim.

As we are now on the road to recovery as stated by the Department of Veterinary Services, it is now time for our State Government to look into the improvement of our Dog Bye Laws and work towards Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO). Legislation and Education is the key towards Responsible Pet Ownership. Education towards RPO should be advocated as this is equally important. To achieve this aim, we need the co-operation from all in the community. Shelters will never be able to hold all strays reported and/or handed in unless their resources are limitless.

School holidays are near now and once again SPCA will be organizing the above workshops for children of ages 9 till 12 years. Parents are welcome too.
