World Animal Day was started in 1931 at a convention of ecologists in Florence as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. October 4 was chosen as World Animal Day as it is the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

Since then, World Animal Day has become a day for remembering and paying tribute to all animals and the people who love and respect them. It's celebrated in different ways in every country, with no regard to nationality, religion, faith or political ideology.

On Sunday October 5, 2014, we commemorated World Animal Day by organizing an event at the Japanese Garden in Island Park. Despite uncooperative weather, the event was a big success. Our thanks to PAA for putting on a dog parade and dog tricks show, and for helping us with the dog competition. Twenty two dogs competed in three classes - small dogs, medium/large dogs and mongrels - with trophies for each class, plus the grand prize for overall "Best Looking Dog" (top photo below, all our winners - bottom photo, "Best Looking Dog").

Thanks to all who came to support the event. It was great to see so many people bring along their 4 legged friends to socialize.

'WE LEARN - RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP WORKSHOP' jointly partnered with Smartheart Perfect Companion Group

We will be running workshops on responsible pet ownership for kids aged 9 to 12 during the upcoming school break beginning 26th November until end December. Dates are November 26, December 3, December 10, December 17 from 2pm to 4:30pm. Contact us on 04 281 6559 or email info@spca-penang.net to book. The workshops are free but spaces are limited. Please book early.

We are running a photo competition for people who have adopted cats & dogs from SPCA Penang. There will be two categories - (a) dogs and (b) cats - with a prize in each category.

Please submit a photo of your adopted pet with one sentence describing the animal or how the animal has changed your life. Please send the photos to photos@spca-penang.net (low or high-res is OK). Mention your name and the pet's name. Deadline for submission is December 5, 2014.

Unfortunately adoptions during October were very low. If you think you might adopt a cat or dog, do drop by to meet our animals. Also please pass this information on to people you know who may also be interested.

Only seven happy homes for dogs were found in October - no cats were adopted. For adoption, visit our adoption gallery at http://spca-penang.net/adoption-gallery/.
