How committed are you towards your pets?!

Dogs are known to be MAN'S BEST FRIEND. Is it very true? When you choose to decide to own a pet, do you decide at the spur of the moment just because the dog is cute/lovable/adorable? Or just, I need one to guard my house! My children want a pet so badly! Did you ever think of the years of commitment of at least 12 and beyond?

Why do people relinquish their pets? We are very concerned lately with the trend where pet owners call to surrender their pets so easily with the hope that SPCA can perform miracles by having their pet animals taken away to be rehomed or kept for life. SPCAs all over are not meant to run shelters with a 'no kill' policy. They do what they can with the best interest and welfare of the animals concerned. Rehoming of animals need careful selection with the hope that every pet animal adopted goes to a forever home where the owner can be responsible enough to care for them till they reach the other side of the rainbow bridge.

Pets should not be discarded at one's whim and fancies. A male Highland Westie named 'HAPPY' was dumped at the shelter with no further details given by a worker. His boss sent him with a message "It is better for me to dump here then on the road". It is absolutely true, but is SPCA a dumping ground for pet owners? Is the owner trying to avoid veterinary bills?

Happy - needed a full shave due to his skin condition.

This male Shih Tzu named 'Sebastian' was bought for the sake of kids who wanted a pet so badly. Another Shih Tzu was brought in by a good Samaritan. She was found crossing the road along Jalan Trengganu and was nearly knocked down. She could have been dumped by her owners as it was noted that there was no such dog roaming in that area.

Be prepared to invest extra time with your pets if you love to keep long furry paw friends as they need to be brushed and groomed regularly. If one does not have the time for that, please do not indulge in keeping pets with long fur.
A GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUED

SPCA, with the help of the police, have rescued a golden retriever which was left abandoned by its owner in an empty house in Tanjong Bungah. Investigations showed that the dog was abandoned for more than a month and had to rely on food from the neighborhood. He was even seen eating his own faeces. The dog was examined and found to be undernourished and blind. Five year old Ashie was found a happy home with a sympathetic family.

Education of the young on Responsible Pet Ownership
On 25th Sept. a group of 13 students from the Persatuan Agama Buddha, SMK Westlands and 2 teachers made a visit to get to know what SPCA is all about. They were indeed very attentive, well-mannered and took great interest to know the society. They have also fundraised on their own and presented a donation towards the society. SPCA says 'THANK YOU'.

Corporate Social Responsibility Program
Volunteerism and Awareness of NGO in need of help

Dell employees from various departments chose SPCA as their choice and offered to volunteer their services to the animals. We hope they had great fun with the animals while helping to clean and paint their kennels, plus socialize with the cats and dogs awaiting adoption. This can be a good way to de-stress from a hectic work schedule.

Meet our 'STARS' in Forever Homes

We take great pains to ensure that our animals who are adopted go to forever homes. A lot of time is spent with everyone who decides to adopt. This will at least satisfy ourselves while ensuring that we will not have failures, meaning having the pet animal returned.

HIGHLIGHT - HAPPY REUNION WITH THEIR OWNERS

Our intuition that Rocky the Golden Retriever escaped from his home due to the heavy thunderstorm was correct as the owner has confirmed it too. His short stay at the shelter caught the hearts of our kennel staff and volunteers. Rocky is indeed an obedient dog! He could understand and obey commands.

Eight year old Rocky will be looking for a 'forever home' as his owner has indicated that he will be migrating soon. Anyone who is willing to spend another 5 years or more and is ready to commit to giving Rocky a good home can contact his master Mr. Teh at 012-4877145/04-2283733. Think before you adopt! Please remember the golden words in our dictionary 'RESPONSIBILITY' & 'COMMITMENT'.

Another dog - a Siberian Husky named Hitam found near a garbage dump in Taman Lip Sin was also reunited. Many thanks to all who have helped in spreading the word around to help reunite the many lost pets reported.

Moby - another Shih Tzu was also reunited.

There are many dogs and cats out there which went missing and were never found. We share their loss and hope that owners would exercise more care with their pet animals.
