SPCA Penang Shelter Procedures
Shelter work has never been easy! It stresses staff and volunteers each time an animal is brought in, be it surrendered, abandoned and/or lost. A lot is expected of us by the public when the animal is handed over. Expectations cannot always be met so please allow us to do the best we can once the animal(s) are accepted into our shelter. We are often asked, how long do you keep them? We've heard talk going around that we keep an animal a maximum of 14 days and then the animal is put down - not so. To know more of our shelter procedures, we invite the public to visit us during our kennel visiting hours.
No duration of time is given for any animal that comes in. They will be given their veterinary health check followed by routine deworming, de-ticking and vaccinations etc before proceeding for adoption. Some are fortunate to be adopted and some are still awaiting homes.
Last month alone, we had four elderly abandoned Shih Tzus brought in and one blind poodle was dumped outside our gate entrance. If only the owners could be responsible enough to bring the animal in, not just dump, we would appreciate the action.

On the more positive side, we are happy to note that we had 10 adoptions in August of which four were cats and six were dogs.
A litter of 11 cute puppies were abandoned at a market in town and been picked up by our Animal Care Officer. If only their mum had been neutered, they would not have to endure the uncertainties of finding a home.

Year 2019 will be our 10th Anniversary Year in producing our very own calendars as a means of fundraising for SPCA. Our 10th year production features sponsors’ pets pawing around Penang Island’s heritage sites. Grab your copy at RM15 for yourself or as a gift for your friends near and far. At the same time, you are also supporting a worthy cause. Funds raised will go towards our Neutering Fund. Orders for 20 copies and above will entitle you to free delivery within Georgetown.
