SPCA Penang appreciates the initiative taken by the Selangor Government and Ipoh City Council to introduce the TNR program to its communities. Though this is not something new to crow about at least this is a first step taken in working towards reducing the stray population. As proven, this is the best way forward and will eventually reduce the pet over-population provided that this is carried out consistently with no break.

The local government will be seen as animal friendly, thus we are seen to be 'KILLING THE CRISIS, NOT THE ANIMAL'. One person cannot do it alone as there is power in numbers. As our new updated MBPP Dog Bye Laws are not forthcoming as promised, it is time that the MBPP takes a step forward and follows suit in introducing the TRAP, NEUTER AND RETURN PROGRAM for the benefit of all in the community of Penang Island. SPCA Penang would be ever willing to co-operate with the MBPP in this program.

Communication with your dog is a necessary part of training. This does not mean that we need to learn how to bark. Dogs rely more on body language. They make wonderful companions should we give ourselves time to understand them better. Please take the opportunity to register should you like to be trained and understand your dog better. The "Adopt, Don't Buy" theme is catching on, as we see more and more people visiting the shelter with a hope of finding a dog or cat of their choice. However, not many understand this concept which is about saving lives by giving them a second chance. Many came with the thinking that they have choices for breeds as in pet shops.

In April, we saw 7 dogs and 1 cat leaving the shelter to their happy homes. Maui, the white terrier dog believed to be lost and/or abandoned was lucky to be rehomed in such a short time. We hope to see more animals adopted in the following months.

We are grateful to the Year Six Student Prefects of the above International School who organized a jumble sale fundraising project for the SPCA in their school recently. A sum of RM1,254.40 was raised. Thank you, Girls and Boys for your noble deed. Our furry friends are happy to receive your support.

We are more than happy to receive visitors to get to know what SPCA is all about and their offer to volunteer their service in cleaning activities as well as spending time with the animals. Such activities are arranged depending on their willingness and choice of service preferred.

We would like to advise that our upcoming briefing for new volunteers is scheduled for 13th May at 9a.m. sharp.

As most stray animals that come into the shelter are heavily infested with ticks, fleas and some with severe skin problems, we wish to appeal for the following:

1) Frontline sprays for cats and puppies
2) Advocate for Cat - Defleaing product for cats
3) Malaseb and/or Triseb Medicated Shampoos - This is used extensively especially for strays coming in with skin problems
4)Cod Liver Oil

To know more on how you can help, please call (04 2816559) or email (info@spca-penang.net).

SPCA TEAM Thank you.
