| CAT OWNERS - TAKE CAUTION OF THIS FUNGUS DISEASE "SPOROTRICHOSIS"
We have heard so much of the common skin diseases: ringworm, mange, fungus in cats and dogs, but we hardly hear of this fungal disease "sporotrichosis". Recently, we received a call from a pet owner on the mainland with a request that she wants her cat to be euthanized. Euthanasia is not something taken lightly and it takes time for one to accept it willingly. Repeatedly on the phone, she insisted that it has to be done by intravenous injection. We assured her that her request will be carried out accordingly.
Upon our visit, our Field Inspectors noticed that both the owner and the cat's skin condition were bad as both had signs of nodular lesions or bumps on their skin. Not knowing about this fungus disease, our Field Inspectors advised the owner to seek medical help. In this case, it was the Medical Profession who had already alerted the owner that this disease could affect her lungs and strongly advised her to get rid of her pet as early as possible. From the veterinarian, it was confirmed that this cat was having sporotrichosis and we were informed that there are a few cats on the island showing signs of this disease too. We advise pet owners and social carers feeding/taking care of stray cats to be more wary of this infectious disease. This occurs mainly in cats more than in dogs as cats have the tendency to go straying and get infected by cats with the disease. Treatment is possible but one has to be consistent in the line of treatment. To know more about this fungus disease, kindly visit:
KEEP YOUR PET HYDRATEDWith the hot temperatures that we are experiencing daily, we would like to advise pet owners to keep their pets hydrated. Kindly ensure that their water bowl is constantly filled with fresh water. We have received a few carcasses of animals that died due to heat stroke.

STARS ADOPTED
The month of March saw 6 dogs and 1 cat leaving the shelter. We are glad that 2 dogs, Sofi & Maddy who were at the shelter for the past 6 months have found their new families. The animals become stressed as shelters are not the best place to house them for a long period of time. They undergo kennel stress. We very much appreciate that they go into good loving homes. For adoption, please visit our website www.spca-penang.net
and click on the adoption gallery icon to view the animals available for adoption.
CSR PROGRAMME BY G HOTEL DIVISION STAFF
Fourteen personnel from the various departments at G Hotel made a visit to perform their CSR program at the shelter on March 17, 2016. They had so much fun taking their turn to bathe the dogs at the shelter. It was a lovely afternoon for the dogs as they had the chance to splash the bathers with soap suds and water. Some had their chance to interact and mingle with the puppies and dogs out at the exercise area. They brought along many bags of dog/cat food, treats and used towels to donated. A cheque presentation for RM1000 was also given. Also present were the press media. Thanks G Hotel for your continued support.
VISIT BY 44 MEMBERS OF THE BOYS BRIGADE FROM CHUNG LING PRIVATE SCHOOL
On March 19, 2016, 44 members of the Boys Brigade and their teachers paid a visit to the shelter to get to know more about the society. A talk was conducted. We are unsure as to how much these students understood SPCA before their visit. However, we are glad that they chose to visit and spend some time with the animals at the shelter.
VISIT BY TAEKWONDO CLUB OF CHUNG LING PRIVATE SCHOOL
Another visit was made by 20 members and a teacher from Taekwondo Club Chung Ling Private School on March 26, 2016.
FAREWELL TO OUR VOLUNTEERS FROM FINLAND
We are ever grateful to this couple. Teppo & Virpi. who cOme all the way from Finland. Teppo and Virpi spend half a year in Malaysia and another half back home. This is their 3rd visit in Penang and they never fail to spend 3 days a week with the animals at the shelter making sure that they all have a chance to come out to interact and socialize. We are sad that they had to leave for their home land. Our shelter animals will definitely be missing them too. To Teppo and Virpi, we thank you for your time well spent with our shelter animals and we hope to see you again sometime in October/November as promised.
