Tipy’s New Best Friend

Tipy’s New Best Friend

My name is Mia, I am 8 years old and I have Asperger’s Syndrome. Not many people know what Asperger’s is, it’s a mild form of autism. I can go to school, but I need a lot of help and attention. I don’t know how to respond to social cues from people and I look gawky and weird to a lot of other kids. I am afraid of many things, as I have sensory issues. It has taken me 2 years to be able to swim with my daddy in a pool. I was afraid of dogs. Until I met Tipy.

Mummy found Tipy at the SPCA and brought her home one day. She looked like a cuddly bundle of fur. I was still a little scared, but Tipy wasn’t scared of me and wanted to be my friend. The best thing about her was that she didn’t care that I could not look at her when I spoke. She didn’t mind that I could not pet her. She just nuzzled under my hand until I had to. Tipy gave me the courage to step out of my shell and now, I can even walk our bigger dog, Spike down the road. (Well, for 5 minutes anyway!)

Tipy is afraid of plastic bags. I think someone has hurt Tipy badly in the past. I feel sad sometimes, as she cannot tell me how she feels or what has made her so scared. I hope that both of us can help each other to be braver and we will have happier days in future. Thank you SPCA for rescuing Tipy so we can have a new member of our family!
