SPCA Penang
Welcome to our December 2025 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

Good greetings to all!

We were delighted to note the many responses received from our video post of a couple dumping cats into our compound recently. This is not the first time that dogs and cats have been dumped inside or outside our compound after office hours. This was not meant to belittle anyone but to create awareness  to not dump animals indiscriminately. We would like to highlight that this way of dumping is inappropriate and why:

  1. When one dumps at our shelter, it wakes up the neighborhood with our dogs barking continuously and causes complaints which can be a problem to the Society.

  2. The cats dumped will run helter-skelter because of all the noise. Sometimes, they go into hiding and are unnoticed for days and this may even procreate a new colony of cats in the area should they then escape.

However, in this case  the four dumped cats were caught by us, have seen a vet, deemed healthy, and have had their first vaccinations. They are now being monitored before being put up for adoption.

Should one come to us with a problem, we will try our best to help solve as much as we can. Our space is very limited and we are unable to receive all and keep them at the shelter forever as this is only a temporary shelter. Even if we can’t receive due to reasons given, we will provide some avenues where one can turn to. As for problems with cats, we never say no to anyone but will encourage the TNR method which we advocate aggressively. We regret to say that most people who bring in cats are reluctant to take back to be released in their areas once neutered. We have a difficult task to look for suitable places to release them.

Adoptions

In November Tito, Rufus and Toffee left the shelter for their forever homes. If you note the pattern for adoption, most of them are very young puppies and kittens. What will happen to the adult ones as they grow older and older? We encourage a lot of elderly visitors who come looking to consider adopting our adult furry friends who have been at the shelter for a long time. This is not always accepted as many would like to see their new adoptee grow with them. One does not need much time in training an adult dog as its behavior will be introduced by our kennel staff and/or volunteers on site. We allow potential and genuine adopters to spend much time with their choice or even have the animal taken home for a trial period before making their decision. We look forward to seeing many of our adult dogs adopted. Would you like to come, visit and give them a second chance? You can view all the dogs currently available here, and cats here.

Happenings

At the invitation of TARUMT, SPCA attended the Guest Participation – TAR UMT–ACCA Business Game Grand Finale 2025 theme "Connecting Hearts, Empowering Voices". The participating students in Penang chose their own NGOs to work with.

We are glad to note that one group who named themselves "Chill Bar Sdn Bhd" collaborated with SPCA Penang and was successfully chosen for the Grand Finale held on 14th November. Their project presented earned them 3rd place as the first was taken by Saigon Business School from Vietnam and the 2nd was by TARUMT Perak. Congratulations to all for their hard work and efforts put in to create awareness on the NGOs they collaborated with.

During the month, we had many students from INTI, USM, DALAT AND TARUMT coming in to perform their community service. A visit was made by management staff from OPPSTAR with a presentation of a great variety of cat canned food for our cats.

A group of Inti students visited to help out:

Another group from Inti College - unfortunately we had heavy rain so they were only able to help out with the cats:

Wish List

We thank the many who have called in to check on our requirements at the shelter. Many have also asked if they could bring in things which are left by their pets that passed away. We welcome any as long as they are useable and can be recycled.

It was fun trying out our dogs on a treadmill given to us. This is one good way to walk them especially when it’s a rainy day and volunteers are unable to interact with the animals at the compound. Here are Cass (dark brown) & Alfie (light brown):
