SPCA Penang
Welcome to our November 2024 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

Good greetings to all!

We do hope those of you celebrating had a good Deepavali!

If only people would be more open-minded when adopting an animal, shelters would not be flooded with so many dogs and cats. Though we respect their choices, most potential adopters coming for adoptions are asking:

  1. "Do you have something small and will not grow big?" We don’t cater to demand, we take in whatever comes when we think it needs a second chance to be re-homed.

  2. "Do you have a big breed dog?" The same will be our answer as above. However, there are not many big breeds given up nowadays, and most probably due to our geographical position for dwellers in Penang who are moving upwards in the sky, big breeds are unsuitable as space is needed for them to move around to express their normal behaviour.

  3. We get comments that a one year old is an old dog and big! Everyone wants a puppy to start with. What happens when they grow bigger? They are deemed to be too big or old. They may look big but not old for their age. A dog and a cat’s life will go beyond 10 and may even live with you until they are 20 years if they are properly cared for. Does age matter a lot when you fall in love with one that you are eyeing for?

  4. Colors matter - For some a black & white dog, especially with white on the feet, is taboo. This is a grandmother’s tale, not appropriate in this day and age. Love all colors please!!

  5. Looking for a Perfect Dog - What is perfect? A dog which can serve our purpose? A guard dog, good behaviour, good with kids and good for the elderly. Every dog needs to be given the basics: interaction, obedience training, socializing and bonding. No dog is a perfect dog when you don’t have time commitment and the financial means to put into it.

It is sad that they are surrendered and/or abandoned when they are no longer wanted by their owners. Let’s all work together to encourage responsible pet ownership through caring and sharing, discuss this when you meet anyone who owns a pet especially a dog or a cat.

Adoptions

What happens when we have inquiries for more animals to be surrendered versus adoptions? There are some who are desperately in need of surrendering of their pets. They are not young but adult animals. Many owners are not happy to be advised on what should be done if they aren’t able to re-home their own pet and also find out that other shelters are not able to receive any more, or pet owners can’t afford the monthly surrendering fee. Many are not able to face the reality and practicality of life. When this happens, the result will be that abandonment takes place. Adoption is a promise! Don't adopt if you can't commit!

October was cats’ month. However, we only manage to find homes for three cats.

Happenings at the Shelter

We made a quick call via our social media  appealing for a used mobile phone as we had lost one. Our sincere thanks to Ms. Charmaine Kam for answering our request.

Occasionally we receive volunteers from abroad who are regularly back to Penang for a short holiday. We appreciate that they come back to spend time socializing with the animals at the shelter. Thanks to Julie Talbot and family from the UK, and Luc Tronco from Belgium.

With the initiative from a group of students at Stonyhurst International School, SPCA Penang made a visit to the school and gave a slide presentation to the Year 11 and 12 students and their teachers during an early morning school assembly.

The month of October was quite a busy time for us as we have groups coming in from schools/colleges and organisations.

Students from Stonyhurst International who spent time at our shelter and donated food/etc as well as attending our presentation at the school:

Our Wish List

It is always nice to have some good samaritans calling in to inquire on our needs at the shelter. One will not go wrong in bringing food, be it dry or canned for the animals. Sometimes, flavors do matter. Our shelter dogs love lamb, beef and salmon flavor. For the cats, fish flavor is always favored.

To know more on how you can help contribute, please do email us at info@spca-penang.net or call us at 04-2816559.

Thank you
