SPCA Penang
Welcome to our July 2025 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

Good greetings to all!

Generations of the yesteryears (The Boomers) still associate us as RSPCA and understood our mission very well. Most still ask if we are RSPCA and are confused when we answer SPCA on the phone and wondering why the `R’ was dropped. Explanation has been given that Malaysia is no more under the British settlement so the word `ROYAL’ was dropped. Then comes the next generation who are unaware of our struggles and our difficulties in fighting pet overpopulation. Educating the public on the importance of vaccinations for their pet has been inculcated amongst pet owners way back in the late 70s and early 80s. Then comes on the importance of neutering to avoid overbreeding. The trend for neutering was not crucial then as many were not too keen due to many reasons be it religion and so forth. To cope with the problem, kind social carers began sheltering the many unwanted/abandoned. Today, Shelters and animal welfare NGOs have increased. We are indeed happy to note as the responsibility of taking care of unwanted/abandoned animals within the community is shared. Keeping a pet has almost become part of one’s life in every household. We see changes now with all the intensive publicity and instilling on pet owners on neutering. It is our wish that we see no shelter mushroom soon as it is disheartening to hear shelters struggling with hundreds and thousands of animals needing support. Let’s start a goal to educate one another on `RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP' today! We are offering subsidized neutering vouchers for pet owners.

We do our part and you must do yours.

To be eligible, kindly go to this link and return the completed form to us.

SSI Charity Night at Raia Hotel : We had the opportunity of being invited to receive a donation from the Sekariat Sukarela India USM Charity Night.

Uplands Work Experience Placement

We welcomed two students, Nathalia Vitoria Santhos and Raizo Haig Streeter, from the Uplands School for spending a week gaining work experience at the shelter. We hope they had achieved their goals and gained much knowledge from the SPCA.

Here are messages from Nathalia:

'I just wanted to say a big thank you for allowing me to complete my work experience at SPCA Penang. I really enjoyed working with the animals and learning more about how the shelter runs. It was an eye-opening experience, and I have learned a lot about caring for animals and the responsibility that comes with it.'

And from Raizo:

'Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to work with you. I learned a lot more than I expected and the week I spent working at the SPCA was incredibly valuable and interesting. I got to know what it is like working at the shelter, as well as acquire some knowledge about caring for your own pets at home. I had so much fun playing with the cats and dogs.'

To the students of Inti College,  Powiis Leo Club and Uplands Do Something Society, we thank you all for organizing fundraising projects in your own way to help support the shelter.

Our thanks to the POWIIS Leo Club (represented here by Jia Ying Lee) for all their efforts to collect supplies for our cats & dogs:

Our grateful thanks to these Inti International college students who visited and made a monetary donation and gave us pet food:
