SPCA Penang
Welcome to our May 2024 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

Good greetings to all!

Please think seriously before taking on a pet.

It does not make sense to own pets when renting a home or when residing temporarily in a foreign land. Do think of all consequences one will face like:

  1. Getting permission from your landlord to keep pets.

  2. Making sure not to go overboard and take on more than you can handle (due to a limit of space, time and/or finances).

  3. If you do take on a pet, please make provisions as to how your pet will be moved should you be evicted and/or perhaps transferred out of the state or country.

  4. As a foreigner, please don’t think of owning a pet when you are not able to take your pets back to your home country. Do investigate first - it's never easy and it is not cheap. If you do want to move your pet, please do some research on the procedures involved before engaging into it.

Very often, we are called to take over pets when the tenants left a property unannounced and pets are left behind. Or when the owner is moving to another country and discovers how difficult and expensive it is. Due to space constraints, we are not able to accommodate all requests and SPCA does not keep animals for life at the shelter.

Adoptions

There has been little improvement in adoptions for the past month. In April, we only managed to rehome two dogs and one cat. (Sorry, no adoption photos for April available yet.)

Happenings & Community Service

We would like to extend our thanks to the following student groups, companies and institutions:

Inti College's Gold for Floof team ran a fundraising campaign selling keychains and stickers to buy food and treats for dogs & cats. The food plus a cash balance was received.

Presentation of food and donations from Segi College Students. They did a fundraising to collect funds through their college and family to purchase food. Also, we received a cash donation from them.

We were invited and gave a talk to the students of MCKL on Responsible Pet Ownership and Animal Cruelty.

We visited Wisdom Shine Educare Center to talk to the kids about the responsibility of having pets and learning about strays. The kids had so many questions! Well worthwhile trip.

More from our Wisdom Shine Educare Center visit. Before our arrival, the teachers organized a poster competition for Form 1 thru 3. We gave a SPCA t-shirt to all the winners.

The SEGi Psychology Club highlights the crucial contribution of pets to mental well-being and to express appreciation for their companionship. Furthermore, club members have collected and donated recyclable materials like newspapers, paper, and cardboard to the SPCA, aiming to showcase how these scraps can serve as cleaning tools, bedding for strays, or be sold by the SPCA to raise funds.

Keysight Technologies Penang visit for Community Service.
