SPCA Penang
Welcome to our March/April 2025 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

It was an unpleasant few weeks for us with the viral video of SPCA and distressing remarks by netizens which have been circulating. We just wish and hope that the public can understand better our objectives and aims. This organization started to adopt a no 'no kill' policy back in 1948. We knew very well that we would be unpopular with some should we choose this path which is aligned with the policies of the RSPCA, and that we act within the advice of the veterinarian. Practicality and reality are our main concern. Daily, we are plagued with requests via calls or visits (sometimes from as far as the northern states to Ipoh and beyond) to receive unwanted and abandoned animals especially cats and dogs. Unfortunately, we can’t help all. The rate of adoptions will not match with the number of animals received each month.

To avoid flooding of animals at our shelter, we advise of our policies and make sure the surrenderer understands our stance before surrendering any animal to us. We will not receive any animal should the surrenderer  not be agreeable to our policies. If that happens we provide a list of all NGOs which have a 'no kill' policy. Sadly, many members of the public who are genuinely helping strays are turned away by these other shelters after being told "sorry we are full".

Accepting strays to our shelter

Very regularly, we have very young kittens brought in who have been found in car engines/etc., plus abandoned new born kittens with eyes still unopened. Anyone bringing in will be given the choice to help foster for at least two months if they can, with milk powder provided by us. However, we hardly have anyone willing to do so and that leaves us with no choice! Pregnant female cats and/or those with a litter are often brought in, unfortunately most of the young ones are very vulnerable and may not be able to survive. Should we not accept and they are returned to the streets, they will probably be run over by vehicles or abused. The weak kittens are kept in our ICU, receiving regular vet check-ups - sadly many do not pull through. We keep the healthier ones, nurture them and put them up for adoption after they have been vaccinated. The older cats are neutered and released. For dogs, we have no policy to practice releasing (even after a long time stay at the shelter) as they are very dependent on people. We keep hoping they can find good homes. We just wish the many members of the public who have negative thoughts on the shelter would come forward to lend a helping hand, foster, adopt or spend time volunteering. We promise you there’s fun working with the animals.

Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri to all those celebrating:

Adoptions

We had six dogs and two cats adopted in February & March but sadly three dogs were returned. Adult dogs need a lot of time to adapt to a new home. They need extensive time and patience - many have only ever been on the streets or in a shelter so need time to understand their new environment and what is expected of them.

We ran this in social media some time ago and feel it's time to re-run:

Social Services

We are always delighted to receive groups of students and adults from various institutions requesting to do CSR or social services at the shelter. This is also a good way of educating "responsible pet ownership" and exposes the students on how animal dumping happens in shelters. This can be an eye opener to them and we encourage them to spread awareness on the importance of animal welfare within the general community.

From Inti group of students:

"Dear SPCA Team,

I hope this email finds you well. On behalf of our group of 10 members, I would like to express our sincere gratitude for the warm welcome and invaluable experience during our visit to SPCA on February 6.

The comprehensive presentation gave us a deeper understanding of SPCA’s background, mission, and the incredible work you do, including the difficult yet necessary decisions regarding euthanasia. We were also truly impressed by the cleanliness of the facility and the exceptional care provided to the animals. Participating in hands-on tasks such as preparing enzyme and maintaining the facility further enriched our experience.

Beyond that, we were profoundly moved by the message on the importance of adoption over purchasing pets. It reinforced our belief in SPCA’s mission and the crucial role it plays in promoting animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.

Thank you once again for this meaningful and eye-opening experience. We deeply appreciate the work you do and look forward to supporting SPCA in any way we can in the future.

Best regards,
Ong Hui Fen"
