SPCA Penang
Welcome to our April 2023 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

Dear Members and Friends,

Good Greetings to all.

Fundraising is never easy especially for NGOs. In the old days, we used to organize food fairs, fashion shows and coffee mornings etc. This involved a lot of time and effort with the help of volunteers and members. It was fun at the end of it all as everyone involved is satisfied with their engagement in such activity in the name of doing good for charity. With good blessings from our supporters, we are able to stand tall to provide whatever assistance needed by the public as well as give hope with a second chance at life for all animals under our care.

We are grateful to the many young generations of today at schools, colleges and universities offering to do their bit for charities in raising funds online and also promoting our merchandise in their colleges. The students at TARUMT are doing their fundraising for 5 charitable organizations. To donate, please visit https://www.simplygiving.com/nonprofit/tarumtpenang

To the students at Disted, UOW and MCKL thank you for helping us promote our SPCA merchandise. Your efforts are indeed commendable.

UOW(KDU) Students arranged an event in their college in Batu Kawan in March to promote our merchandise and take donations.

Leo Club Powiis presented RM 400 they raised through bake sale. This donation will be channeled into our neutering fund.

Adoption is a Promise!

Our adoptions in March were not promising. We only had four cats and two dogs adopted.

Why Dogs Bite!

We often get complaints from dog owners that their dog bites them. A dog may also show aggressive behavior when they are ill or injured. Sometimes, dogs bite due to their dominant behaviour. They may also exhibit fear causing them to growl or bite. It’s best to consult your veterinarian to ascertain if your dog reacted in such a manner out of pain or discomfort. If it is out of pain be more careful when touching, be it petting or stroking.

Even though a dog exhibits friendly behaviour, don’t underestimate them. Always, ask for owner’s permission before petting. This is to ascertain that it is alright to touch.

Ways to prevent your dog from biting:

  • Neutering helps, your veterinarian will advise you accordingly
  • Bonding and or socializing with your pet frequently. Start early in puppyhood if possible
  • Provide basic training for your dog
  • Do not allow your dog to be possessive of their food and toys
  • Stop bad behaviour like nipping ankles, mounting or biting when playing.

Activities & Happenings at the Shelter

It was indeed a busy month for the administration staff entertaining group visits from the various colleges and universities. This is the way forward to educate the young and inculcate in them the responsibilities one has to take on when keeping a pet. It is an eye opener for them to understand better why so many animals are being dumped at shelters.

Two groups of students from RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus (RUMC) visited in March to help out. Thank you!

Volunteer Briefing

Our next volunteer briefing will be held on Saturday 15th April. Time: 9.30 a.m. sharp at the SPCA premises. Though we send reminders to all who had signed to reconfirm their attendance, it would be nice if everyone comes on time so as not to keep others waiting.
