SPCA Penang
Welcome to our March 2023 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

Good greetings to all!

When you are feeling down and stressed out, what would be best for you?  Pet lovers would agree to turn to their pets.  It is believed that stroking, petting and even hugging a loving animal will help one be relieved from stress.  Let us hope that it works the other way too.

Our shelter animals are always looking forward to receive the tender touch from our volunteers and visitors daily. They don’t get to see many volunteers on weekdays as volunteers are possibly busy with their work and most favored coming in during weekends.

Our dogs are fortunate to have both Virpi and Teppo back from Finland to be with them for the past 3 months.  The movement control order had restricted them from coming for the last 2 years.  We are so grateful to have had them here annually while they escape the Finnish winter. Unfortunately, they have given us the unpleasant news that this is their ninth year and their last in Penang and are unable to come back. They missed their pet very much while in Penang and have decided to spend their next winter somewhere near home where they could bring their pet dog with them.

From the SPCA Team and the furry friends, we thank you both Virpi and Teppo for your invaluable time and services rendered at the shelter. You are always welcome back whenever you have in mind to be back in Penang, Malaysia.

Adoption is a promise

In February, we had ten cats and four dogs adopted.

Missing Pets

Very often, we have been approached to help find missing pets.  We would like to advise pet owners to be very cautious and exercise more care to avoid this problem.  It can be very traumatic for you and your pet when it goes missing. Here are some tips:

  • Always check behind as you drive out to ensure that your gate is closed
  • Let your pet wear a tag to indicate your pet’s name and your telephone number
  • If you have to walk your pet, make sure that your pet is leashed
  • If there are guests staying with you, do alert them that you have a pet
  • Ensure that your pet is confined should you make appointments for any repair work to be done
  • Get a microchip inserted on your pet too, this can be done at a veterinary clinic.

Activities & Happenings at the Shelter

One hundred and thirty six children and teachers from Akidz Academy made an educational visit to the shelter. The children had great fun spending their time with our cats and dogs at the shelter.

Fifteen delegates from Roche Diagnostics Asia Pacific offered to perform their CSR service at the shelter while they were here in Penang for their conference at the Rasa Sayang Hotel. A fundraising event was also organized at their Gala Night for 3 charities.  We are indeed honored to be chosen as one of their beneficiaries. A total sum of RM20,000+ was raised for the 3 charities.  From the bottom of our hearts we thank all at Roche Diagnostics Asia Pacific for their generous contributions.

A group (Project Loyals) of ten BBSUT students from Inti College collaborated with SPCA for their MPU 3442 Community Service Project.  They fundraised to enhance the shelter by upgrading our play area for the shelter dogs.  The team members also contributed mural paintings on the walls in the dog exercise compound.

Our sincere thanks to all the students involved for the wonderful job and efforts put in.  We would also like to thank all the donors who have made this Project Loyals possible.

We are grateful to have been invited to pariticpate in FurPetzEXPO on February 25 & 26 at Straits Quay. It was a fun event and our pups enjoyed it too! Thanks to all of you who visited.

Our thanks to a group of students from Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) DISTED College who are preparing a fundraising event for SPCA Penang.

Five students from Inti College came to help out at the beginning of February. Thank you!
