SPCA Penang
Welcome to our February 2025 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

Good greetings and Gong Xi Fa Cai to all celebrating!

The start of the New Year 2025 greeted us with batches of puppies brought in from various districts of the island. Do you have any new resolutions for the New Year – Year of the Snake? If you don’t, we have!

  • Pet owners – Don’t follow your feng shui if it says `best for you to keep a snake this year’. They should be in the wild and not in your home.
  • If you are a pet rescuer, don’t keep rescuing and to find you are unable to keep anymore. Respect your limit and think before you rescue. We received many requests to take over.
  • If you are a community carer, please do make sure that you care for the strays released out there. Their welfare is much more needed than just feeding. We have pleas to look into them when they are injured and/or in poor health condition.
  • If you are adopting, please visit shelters. There are many dogs and cats out there waiting for good loving homes.
  • Lastly, if you decide to keep a pet – please think over and over again. Do I have the time, space and financial means. Our key message to you `Please be a Responsible Pet Owner’

By the way, please keep your pet safe this festive season. Firecrackers do worry them. They will run helter skelter and end up on the streets to become a 'stray’. While you are enjoying your holiday, take steps to keep them safe.

Adoptions

In January, we had Raisin, Peanut, Ritchie and Freya adopted. Our Emma has gone for a 'homestay’ hoping to find a good match at her new home.

Social Service by INTI College Students

A group of ten students from Inti College Group 3 had a field day working with staff at the shelter. Chores such as cleaning, sweeping, bathing dogs and spending time with animals are the normal activities laid out. Activities such as this are an eye opener especially for people who have no knowledge on what keeping a pet is all about. One can have their first experience to learn animal handling at shelters before deciding to keep a pet. A great way forward to Responsible Pet Ownership.

TNR Program for Cats

At end of 2024, a total of 827 cats and kittens were received. Not all were able to go through under our TNR Program. We appeal to social carers who feeds strays to think of their multiplication as cats breeds faster than dogs. Do come and share with us if you have a problem of stray cats in your area. We can work together to help reduce the population of stray cats should you be willing to help release back in the area where they belong.

We have received a continuous supply of these from the well-wisher who makes them. New stock at RM10 each of the key chains are now available. Do drop by to purchase.
