Welcome to our February 2023 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

Good greetings and Happy Chinese New Year to all our members and supporters celebrating this festive season.

While we celebrate with the firing of crackers, we would like pet owners to be mindful of their pets. Do keep them safe as they can be stressed with the unusual thunderous noise, thus they can easily escape into hiding and get lost.

At the start of the New Year, we were swamped with calls for surrendering of pets as well as for reporting of strays. On top of the list was cats and a total of 60+ cats were brought in. Frequent complaints on the existence of cats  being a nuisance in the neighborhood have also been received. Some are pregnant. We hope feeders and/or owners take great concern over this matter and ensure their cats well-being.

Adoption is a Promise!

Having a pet at home is always and added benefit to the household! However, it is most important that everyone in the family is agreeable to share their commitment. There are many points to consider before adoption:

1. Should you be adopting to keep your elderly parents company, a young dog is not advisable as a young dog tends to have lots of energy and elderly parents may not be able to cope. Do consider the many adult dogs which are mature, calmer and not so active.

2. Families with young children: while it is good to introduce young animals into the home, do encourage responsible pet ownership with the young. Pets’ life especially dog and cats will go beyond 10 years and more.

3. Should you not be staying permanently, or are renting a place to stay, do think carefully before you consider adopting a pet into your home. Shelters are filled with unwanted and abandoned animals, just because the owner has to move or encounters some other reason. It is recommended that people help with the fostering of animals, or volunteer their time at shelters, rather than make a full-time commitment.

In January, we had eight dogs and cats finding new homes.

Mango the lucky cat

Mango was dumped and brought in to us at an age estimated to be four years. Fortunately her stay at the shelter was short, we had thought she would be difficult for rehoming as she had a snobbish and unfriendly character. We now hear of how utterly spoilt she is from her mistress at her Forever Home after more than a year.

"Mango is full of zest and a good entertainer at home. We need to keep finding new toys to keep her entertained. She moves freely in the house and keeps my Mum alert while I am at work. Her weight is now 10 kg. Yes, she definitely needs some exercise to keep fit to slim her down."

Looking back at Happenings at the Shelter

After a short holiday break, a new term has begun. We welcomed the students from both Straits International School and POWIIS for their weekly visits, spending time with our animals as well as some organizing, and some cleaning activities at the exercise compound and kennels.

We were also visited by Home Schooling Kids, MAHA Student Group, DISTED College students, USM students and employees from ViTrox.com.

New Student Project

A group of Inti College students are working on a project to enhance the dogs exercise area at the shelter. They have already begun on painting the walls and adding a mural as shown below. They have also set up a fund to get contributions towards the purchase of exercise equipment such as ramps & tunnels. Stay tuned - more to come - but you can follow their progess on instagram @project_loyals

Volunteer Briefing

Our next volunteer briefing will be held on Saturday 18th February. Time: 9.30 a.m. at the SPCA premises.

Our Wish List

We'd like to thank all our well wishers who have answered our wishlist for January. We are often asked what we need most. It would be best if we can be given a call or send us an email so that we can relate what’s needed at that time. From the bottom of our hearts, we say "THANK YOU".
