Dear Members & Friends
Happy Chinese New Year greetings to all and may the Year of the Rat bring you good health, wealth and good fortune.
In the wake of the Novel Coronavirus spreading almost everywhere on the globe, we pray that this unfortunate crisis which happened during this festive season can be controlled soon. We wish that everyone will practice hygiene to avoid this crisis from happening in our homes. Although this Coronavirus strain has nothing to do with coronavirus in dogs, we would like to remind pet owners to be vigilant. Do teach your loved ones, especially the young, to clean themselves after they handle their pet animals. Do make sure that your pet’s vaccinations are all up to date too.
Continuing reports of strays, animal abandonment, lost animals and abuse/neglect As usual we are flooded with incoming calls for picking up strays found in carparks at highrise buildings. Are these 'strays' we wonder? It's hard to imagine how dogs can be at a high level floor area unless they were put there. We feel it is more likely these are unwanted dogs dumped by their owners. We would like to inform that SPCA will not pick up healthy strays unless they are confined. A service charge or a donation will be solicited when a van is dispatched for collection. This will greatly help towards maintenance and upkeep of our ambulances. |

In January, we had five cats and seven dogs adopted. Even though this is nothing to shout about, it is a good start for year 2020.
We have quite a number of dogs which have been with us for more than a year and are taking up space which we'd like to allocate to new ones. 'Pumpkin' is one of them. He is a long-term resident and has been at the shelter since January 5th, 2019. He is estimated to have been born in October 2018. He’s a good watchdog and it would be more meaningful if he went into a compound house with space for him to express normal behavior or perhaps a small farm. Many potential adopters have come and gone but are not interested in him, possibly because he was once a case of abuse and he has a very big scar on his back probably caused by being scalded with hot water. We sincerely hope he could be rehomed very soon! Come visit him.

| Happenings at the SPCA Shelter | |

A group of friends from Salt & Light Fellowship paid a visit to the shelter. Twelve students and three teachers made their visit worthwhile by presenting their donation raised through the sale of SPCA Calendars in their school recently. They managed to raise RM1600 through the sale of the calendars. On January 17 we had a visit from students of St. Christopher's International Primary School. They toured the shelter and presented us with the funds they had made at school selling our SPCA calendars:
As the New Year starts, we are beginning to receive requests from colleges to allow students to perform their community service towards NGOs. The normal routine tasks requested of the students can range from exercising shelter animals to cleaning kennels/cattery and maintenance jobs. A short talk will be given to ensure that visitors understand the procedures and running of the animal shelter. SPCA Penang, together with VS Outlet Sdn Bhd, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding. VS Outlet has proposed to raise funds for SPCA through the sale of NINETYSEVEN dog and cat teeshirts which will be sold on selected distribution channels from 3rd February until 16th February. 50% from the proceeds of sale from this campaign will be donated to SPCA Penang (the other 50% is going to SPCA Selangor). | Volunteer Briefing | |

Our last briefing saw around 20 new recruits signing up all eager to interact and spend time with the animals at the pound. We hope to see them very often working with the animals at the shelter. Kindly take note that our next volunteer briefing will be held on 15th February at the SPCA premises. Time: 9 a.m. sharp. We sincerely wish to receive the presence and commitment from all volunteers who signed in. Please do attend on the date when you chose to come in. |
