SPCA Penang
Welcome to our January 2025 Newsletter!

Dear Members & Friends,

Good greetings and a very HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025 to all!

Year 2024 did not prove to be promising as we received many calls for surrendering of animals and cases of carcasses brought in that were found to be poisoned. Cases of abuse reported has also been recorded. Many have been advised and referred to visit the portal at the Department of Veterinary Services to officially lodge their complaints with videos and/or photos of the abuse  they have witnessed. Unfortunately, not all are happy to do such as they want to remain anonymous while making their report. Animal cruelty is now much more highlighted in the social media and we hope that witnesses would come out bravely and speak for the voiceless animals. Let’s hope Year 2025 brings us good blessings.

Adoptions

There was a drastic drop in the number of animals adopted in year 2024 over the previous year. We only had 65 adoptions of cats and dogs. But we are not disheartened as in December we saw two of our long stay residents adopted - Leo (top  left) who was at the shelter with us for four years along with Taco (top right) who has been with us for more than a year. Both have left the shelter for their new happy home. There are still many who have lived years at the shelter awaiting homes. Do help promote on the many dogs and cats at shelters awaiting good homes.

Community Service

Our December month was busy with students from TARUMT visiting us for social service and organised fundraising campaigns. Our heartfelt thanks especially to the TARUMT RIM1SGI Group of students who extended their efforts to create awareness on responsible pet ownership at the Methodist Boys School Jalan Air Itam and fundraise as well in their TARUMT Campus.

TARUMT Student presentation at Methodist Boys School:

SPCA collaborated with a group of students from the USM in a webinar. This was opened to all students at the university. SPCA shared with them the facilities provided and how they can volunteer at the shelter. We hope to be able to receive their participation in volunteerism.

Volunteer Briefing

Our first briefing for the year 2025 will be held on Saturday 18th January. Time: 9.30 a.m. sharp at the SPCA premises. We advise all to be punctual as well as letting us know a day in advance should they are not able to attend on that day.

Take Care of your Pets during CNY

  1. Keep your pets safe at home in an area with less noise as they can be stressed with the firing of crackers.

  2. Always keep your gate/door shut to prevent them from escaping/running away as it can be very traumatizing to both owner and the animal.

  3. If you are away for a period of time, do make early arrangements to send your pet to a safe and reliable place for boarding.

  4. Should you arrange with your neighbors to keep an eye on your pet please do request that your neighbor check your pet occasionally to keep your pet safe and calm

  5. At any time, please don’t tie your dog on a chain outside your house as your pet dog can get entangled while being traumatized by any thunderous noise and/or the sound of fire crackers.

  6. Should you have to keep your pet within your compound, please check on them every now and then as your presence may calm them.

  7. Please do not let your pet roam on its own outside your house. Should you walk them, please use a good leash to avoid them escaping from your hands.

We wish all our members and friends celebrating GONG XI FA CAI
